Beyond Words:An Educator's Guide to Teaching English to the French-language Learner

Practices, Approaches and Strategies to Meet the Needs of English Learners

Strategy 2 - Creating a Supportive Environment

English learners do best in classrooms where they feel safe, welcomed, and respected. When students feel like they belong, they are more willing to speak, take risks, and step out of their comfort zone.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

Help students feel proud of who they are.

  • Talk about students’ cultures and languages in class. Ensure that students are consulted and give consent prior to bringing this up with the larger group.
  • Use books, stories, and examples that reflect their lives.
  • Let students share their experiences and make connections to what they are learning.

Safe and Inclusive Classroom

Make sure your classroom feels like a safe place to learn.

  • Use kind and respectful words.
  • Celebrate the fact that students are learning a new language.
  • Encourage everyone to speak up and take part in the activity.

Building Relationships

Strong teacher-student relationships make a big difference.

  • Take time to get to know each student.
  • Smile, listen and show that you care.
  • Encourage students and celebrate small successes.
